Welcome to St. Olaf College
Dear Participants in the NCCLA Conference:
On behalf of the Latin American Studies (LAS) program of St. Olaf, I welcome you to our campus. There are eighteen of us on our LAS committee from a variety of departments.. We are looking forward to interacting with you, a group of enthusiastic Latin Americanists.
This is the fourth time that we have hosted the conference, the first was in the 1980s when we did so with Carleton College. Eleven years ago at our last NCCLA conference in Northfield our keynote speaker was Dr. John Tutino of Georgetown University. We are very pleased that he is returning to speak. His latest book, "The Bajío Revolution -- Remaking Capitalism, Community and Patriarchy in Mexico, North America and the World'" was published by Duke University Press last month.
¡A disfrutar de la conferencia! Enjoy the conference.
Sincerely,
León Narváez
Professor of Romance Languages and Latin American Studies
Directions to conference and registration
in Buntrock Commons
The conference will be held primarily in the ballrooms and Valhalla Dining Room of Buntrock Commons, the student center. Parking is available across from the front of Buntrock Commons. You do not need a pass to park in the lot. There is visitor parking in the front area of the lot. Do not park in spots where one has to pay.
Once you enter Buntrock Commons you have two options -- climb the stairs to the third floor or take the elevator (after entering the building turn right towards the bookstore and then take a left until you reach the elevators).
On the third floor from the stairs you turn right and then right again, you walk straight ahead and take a left to the Valhalla Dining Room. The ballrooms where most of the presentations are to be given are to the right.
Registration will be located near the Valhalla dinning room beginning at 7:45 a.m. Inside the Valhalla dinning room there will be coffee, water, and small breakfast items. Please be sure to pick up your registration. The first sessions begin at 8:30 both mornings.
The keynote address by John Tutino of Georgetown University will be given Friday evening at 7:00 p.m. in Viking Theater not far from the entrance you used to get into the building. You walk past the bookstore to the right to reach Viking Theater. We expect the talk to be less than an hour. Professor Tutino will talk about Mexico, its contribution to globalization, its response to globalization, and more.
